General Discussion

For the serious or semi-serious. Just don't go off the beaten path.

  1. The Beyond3D forums discovered the job postings on LinkedIn. The listings are seeking a graphics architect, a senior engineer, and a senior performance architect. All three listings mention "next generation console architectures from conception through implementation," suggesting that Microsoft is still in the early stages of work on the next generation Xbox. 2. THQ is dealing with a rather large headache this morning as news surfaces that their shares dropped 21% yesterday as mediocre reviews rolled in regarding their newly released future based game, Homefront. The first person shooter received an average 72 out of 100 for the Xbox 360 version from Metacritic and reviews that are pouring in from websites such as IGN, GameSpot, and Digital Trends are centering around a mediocre score of 7 out of 10 with suggestions that the campaign is too short and the content in Homefront has already been done by other games. Fans are expressing their outrage on Homefront’s Forum over players that have already begun using cheats in the mulitp…

  4. Microsoft, one of the titan’s in the busniess world has brought down the world’s largest spam network, Rustock. Rustock which was formed around 2006, ran from computers running Microsoft Windows and was capable of sending out 25,000 spam messages an hour from an infected PC according to the wiki for the spambot. While working with federal agents, Microsoft’s Digital Crimes Unit was able to attain some of the machines that were running the virus spreader and were able to work with different countries like China and Netherlands to begin the process of disabling the program that was out of the United States. Microsoft later joined forces with Pfizer, FireEye, and the Unive…

So I have two Xboxes. I bought Bulletstorm Epic Edition and my wife is using the big TV to watch movies. So I thought, no biggie, I'll use the 27" LED LCD PC Monitor that the other system is hooked up to. Threw in my copy of Bulletstorm and went to try to play. Nope. Not going to happen. I get prompted to purchase another Online Pass. So I look in the download list, and nope, can't re-download/activate it. Put in my code again. "Invalid". Apparently you cannot play on more than one console EVEN IF IT'S THE SAME F*CKING GAMERTAG. Gah. I blamming hate EA and this crap. I read through the EA Online Pass card's disclosure about 20 times now and NO WHERE does it say …

Talk about your qwik turnaround. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced this morning that Netflix will not be splitting into two separate services as planned. The news comes less than a month after the company's stock went into freefall following its announced split into disc-based and streaming entities named Qwikster and Netflix, respectively. "It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVD," Hasting wrote on the company's official blog this morning. "This means no change: one website, one account, one password... in other words, no Qwikster." Read the rest in …

  13. An Android app developer has published what he says is conclusive proof that millions of smartphones are secretly monitoring the key presses, geographic locations, and received messages of its users. In a YouTube video posted on Monday, Trevor Eckhart showed how software from a Silicon Valley company known as Carrier IQ recorded in real time the keys he pressed into a stock EVO handset, which he had reset to factory settings just prior to the demonstration. Using a packet sniffer while his device was in airplane mode, he demonstrated how each numeric tap and every received text message is logged by the software. Ironically, he says, the Carrier IQ software recorded the “h…

  15. A bill introduced in the Oklahoma Legislature has some folks scratching their heads, as it prohibits "the manufacture or sale of food or products which use aborted human fetuses." Since the bill was introduced late last week by State Sen. Ralph Shortey, a Republican from Oklahoma City, corners of the Internet have been buzzing with the news, as people try to figure out two things: 1) is this real; and 2) is there any reason the bill might be needed? News of the bill was first reported by the AP and The Daily O'Collegian, a student newspaper at Oklahoma State University. It sparked a lively debate in the O'Collegian's readers' comments section, which is connected to Facebo…

  18. Last week, RIAA CEO Cary Sherman confirmed that the country's largest ISPs will voluntarily roll out by July 1 a "graduated response" program aimed at discouraging unauthorized downloading. A Memorandum of Understanding published last summer outlines the program, which was developed without user feedback. Under the new system, a rightsholder accusing an ISP subscriber of infringment will trigger a series of ever-increasing consequences. The responses are graduated in the sense that they escalate after each accusation, beginning with steps aimed at educating users about copyright and culminating in the Orwellian-sounding "mitigation measures" -- bandwidth throttling or acc…

  19. A teacher in South Carolina is on adminstrative leave after the parent of a 14-year-old complained that Orson Scott Card's classic novel was 'pornographic' The parent of a 14-year-old at Schofield Middle School complained to school officials and the police after a teacher at the school reportedly read to his class from the novel. The parent described Ender's Game as "pornographic", local press reported, and complained about its subject matter. Like The Hunger Games, Ender's Game sees teenagers pitting their battle skills against each other. In Card's Hugo and Nebula award-winning story, though, the hero Ender has been recruited for the Battle School, where Earth's most ta…

  22. I just noticed something and it got me thinking. I really feel that we're going to see an increase in standard game pricing now. What brought this up? $69.99. Seventy friggin' dollars for a game. It's been pointed out that this is probably the "deluxe" version but I am going to wager that the "deluxe" version is actually the "full" game they created. The "standard" editions of games are going to now be stripped down, weapons removed, character skins not included, maps not included, and so on. We all hate Day 1 DLC. It's been known for a while now, and now companies are beginning to see that and looking for other ways to make money. Don't get me wrong, I'm not ag…

Came across this on Twitter and the person who tweeted it, was proud his daughter had failed it. I know more than a few females who enjoy military FPS' and LEGO. Why are we limiting our children, or teaching them that they shouldn't be liking something? I like to cook. Guess that makes me a girl. Good job, American Education. P.S. Kudos to his daughter for making extras spaces to include both girls and boys for so many categories.
