General Discussion

For the serious or semi-serious. Just don't go off the beaten path.

  1. I'm glad she wrote this. I'd encourage you all to read it and possibly discuss it back here when you're done. I'm applying the three strikes [X] rule for this thread. If you have a problem with this thread, or a comment, give the thread a strike [X]. If it reaches three strikes, it'll be deleted. However, we're adults, and I think we should be able to discuss this without getting personal, upset or derogatory. http://trixie360.wordpress.com/2013/03/28/sexism-in-games-a-mea-culpa/

  2. More and more info has been leaking out about the next Xbox, codenamed Durango, and all signs are pointing to the rumors being true regarding always online connectivity, mandatory Kinect usage, and the fight against used video games. Previously it's been reported that MS and Sony were looking into ways to disrupt the used game market. There was a lot of uproar over this. Check this out from the Durango Hardware Overview: "Every Durango console will have a hard drive, although its exact capacity has not been chosen. It will be large enough, however, to hold a large number of games. All games will be installed on the hard drive. Play from the optical disc will no…

I have maybe gone 12-14 hours on a console with pauses and stuff I found this article pretty interesting, I do remember the arcades and the hours you could spend in them. It is cool that the old games still have some life. http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/9053237/q*bert-video-game-marathoning-trend-aftermath-king-kong

  7. http://youtu.be/k6_7BOGUXHM http://www.tmz.com/2013/03/19/joe-rogan-transgender-mma-fighter-fallon-fox-ufc-mma/ Would love to hear your thoughts on this. It created quite a stir on Twitter and other social media. I actually watched the podcast that video was made from, live and just knew it'd create controversy. When more than a week went by, I thought I was wrong. I guess TMZ just caught wind of it or something. Also, I'll share my thoughts on this later.

  9. "The Origin platform allows malicious users to exploit local vulnerabilities or features by abusing the Origin URI handling mechanism," the paper claims. "In other words, an attacker can craft a malicious Internet link to execute malicious code remotely on a victim's system, which has Origin installed." Read on at [CVG]

You couldn't dream some of this stuff up. They should make a reality show and just follow around politicians. It'd be the best comedy ever aired in the history of television.

  15. Kashmir Hill covers privacy issues for Forbes magazine. She does this job very well. She is, in fact, so dedicated to her beat that when she had a few hours to kill while visiting Utah she decided it would be fun to go take a look at the massive data center that the National Security Agency is building about 30 minutes south of Salt Lake City. Officer #2, who seemed slightly older than the first but who also carried a little green notebook to record what we had to say, told us he would like for me to delete the photos, and mentioned that it would be easier if we did and that we could be charged with a crime for trespassing and for taking the photos. Honestly,…

  18. Comcast is already one of the worst companies in America, and now it wants to become one of the most annoying. As a part of the industry’s new “six-strikes” anti-piracy system, Comcast will hijack suspected pirates’ web browsers with a persistent pop-pop notification, preventing them from accessing the Internet until they change their ways. (Comcast calls it a “mitigation measure.”) Comcast says the browser hijacking will only go into effect after customers fail to respond to multiple previous Copyright Alerts like the one to the right. This means that no one should be surprised when Comcast cuts them off. “If a consumer fails to respond to several Copyright Aler…

  21. On Monday, the Miami Herald posted an article about rising support for legalized medical marijuana in the state of Florida. The article mentioned an pro-pot activist named Cathy Jordan, who uses the drug to mitigate the symptoms of Lou Gehrig's disease. The article mentioned Sen. Jeff Clemens (D-Lake worth), who is sponsoring a bill to legalize the drug. That bill is named after Jordan. The Bradeton Herald now reports that just hours after that article ran, a team of ski-mask-clad deputies from the Manatee County Sheriff's Department staged a guns-drawn raid on Robert and Cathy Jordan's home. According to Robert Jordan, the cops seized 23 marijuana plants, including th…
