When this eventually launches, I'm all in. A new tool under development by Oregon State computer scientists could radically alter the way that communications work on the web. Privly is a sort of manifesto-in-code, a working argument for a more private, less permanent Internet. The system we have now gives all the power to the service providers. That seemed to be necessary, but Privly shows that it is not: Users could have a lot more power without giving up social networking. Just pointing that out is a valuable contribution to the ongoing struggle to understand and come up with better ways of sharing and protecting ourselves online. "Companies like Twitter, Google, and Fa…

  5. Late February Australia struck down another video game from being sold in their country due to the violence in the game. This time it was NetherRealm’s and Warner Bros’s bloody good fighting game, Mortal Kombat. The reason for the ban involved a series staple, the fatalities. The Australian Classification Board which refused to rate the game said, “……The game includes over 60 fatalities (some of which are noted above) which contain explicit depictions of dismemberment, decapitation, disembowelment and other brutal forms of slaughter. Despite the exaggerated conceptual nature of the fatalities and their context within a fighting game set in a fantasy realm,…

  7. THQ is dealing with a rather large headache this morning as news surfaces that their shares dropped 21% yesterday as mediocre reviews rolled in regarding their newly released future based game, Homefront. The first person shooter received an average 72 out of 100 for the Xbox 360 version from Metacritic and reviews that are pouring in from websites such as IGN, GameSpot, and Digital Trends are centering around a mediocre score of 7 out of 10 with suggestions that the campaign is too short and the content in Homefront has already been done by other games. Fans are expressing their outrage on Homefront’s Forum over players that have already begun using cheats in the mulitp…

  9. Source; Cnet.com After reading this article I have to agree with the opinions of the analysts. I've seen the smartphone and the tablet take a huge step forward as far as usability and transportability. It's much more prevalent in the ARMY now as well, with everyone in my company having a smartphone or tablet that they use for their daily operations. It used to be pen and paper they carried around. Now, whenever my platoon sergeant has some info to put out to the platoon, he pulls his iPhone out to read the notes he took during his meeting with the higher up staff. I find myself using my iPhone for many things as well, such as writing down maintenance notes or downloading …

  10. Popular video game consoles such as Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360 may resemble the new battlefields for national security in the eyes of the U.S. military. The U.S. Navy has begun funding a project to hack previously owned game consoles in an effort to dig up gamers' online chat room information and other stored data. U.S. console gamers can breathe a tiny sigh of relief for now, because the current project forbids targeting "U.S. persons." Instead, the Navy wants a California-based company called Obscure Technologies to buy video game consoles bought in used overseas markets, and to create computer forensic tools capable of hacking such consoles. "This project …

  16. GameStop who is in the middle of pulling a Pinky and the Brain operation, wants access to your Xbox Live Account in the future through a GameStop ID allowing digital purchases of points and DLC to go directly to your console before you leave the store. Speaking to Ars Technica, GameStop’s SVP/GM of Digital, Shawn Freeman spoke about these plans and why they believe it is a good idea. “We… have been a huge seller of those points in the marketplace, “As I understand it, we’re neck and neck, or we sell even more, than they sell directly through Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network. Which speaks to our access to gamers who care about playing those games.” Freeman further stat…

  19. Camacho, 50, was gravely injured in a drive-by shooting in Puerto Rico on Tuesday night. Torres said Camacho suffered a heart attack early Wednesday, worsening his condition, and at one point his heart had stopped. Torres said an initial test showed Camacho had a low level of brain activity and two more tests were being carried out. "We are keeping him alive with medicine. He is a strong guy," he said. "We can maintain him several days like this to see if there is an improvement. Macho's situation is very delicate. The prognosis is very poor," Torres added. The boxer's mother, Maria Matias, arrived in Puerto Rico and was discussing Camacho's medical condition with doctors…

  24. Imagine running down the street, pulling out a brightly colored vibrator, and smacking random strangers with it. You will be able to do this in Saint’s Row: The Third. Now imagine running down that same street and taking a jar that you previously farted in to and tossing it like a grenade at some unsuspecting stranger. This you will not be able to do. Make sense? Didn’t think so. The team behind Grand Theft Auto’s worst nightmare, THQ”s Voilition talked to Game Informer about the not allowed “Farts in a Jar” idea and described censoring the latest installment of the franchise to porn. “It’s like defining porn. I can’t define it, but I know when I see it,” stated Seni…
