GameStop Has Plans For Your Xbox Live Account

GameStop who is in the middle of pulling a Pinky and the Brain operation, wants access to your Xbox Live Account in the future through a GameStop ID allowing digital purchases of points and DLC to go directly to your console before you leave the store.

Speaking to Ars Technica, GameStop’s SVP/GM of Digital, Shawn Freeman spoke about these plans and why they believe it is a good idea.

“We… have been a huge seller of those points in the marketplace,

“As I understand it, we’re neck and neck, or we sell even more, than they sell directly through Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network. Which speaks to our access to gamers who care about playing those games.”

Freeman further states, “Today you pick the card up off the rack that’s associated with that map pack, we ring it up as part of your transaction in the store, and then we give you the code that allows you go home and (access the content).”

“Ultimately, we want to reduce even more of that friction, so when you buy that map pack in our store, we’re going to be able to associate your Xbox profile with your GameStop profile, and then automatically push that to your download queue.”

There were no announcements however as to even if and when this change will take place.

This may be to prevent the dual DRM 1 console/1 account exploit so Gamestop will sell more codes, since it will automatically queue up on your account (unless the next time you sign in is on the console you want to share with, like a sibling's, which they probably hope you'll forget to do. Although I'm not sure if you get console DRM for something already in your queue from elsewhere like Xbox.com), but it will still be fully doable through the normal Xbox LIVE marketplace.

Honestly I don't see the point of buying marketplace content from Gamestop, although, since they're codes they can be bought to give away as gifts or for contests (until this lol).

I like being able to purchase games for real money, but what they are ultimately offering would be nice. However, it would be a feature that makes much more sense if it was online. Why the hell would I go to the store to buy a marketplace item that downloads directly to my xbox? I'd much rather buy online and it just link me to code redemption on xbox.com . I GUESS, you could drive to the store, all the while leaving your xbox on, buy the game and by the time you get home, PRESTO game downloaded. lol, otherwise I don't see much benefit. Especially since they're already just printing the damn codes on your receipt without any card or anything. 0 cost for them.

eh, if this is somethign they do then ill pass on it. my account will remain secured between me and microsoft. while gamestop isnt super far away from where i work im not gonna drive down there to buy stuff i can get on the marketplace already. so unless its a hard copy im in need of ill just stick to the xbox live marketplace.
