The company that went bankrupt after an acrimonious fight with its unionized workers last year is back up and running under new owners and a leaner structure. It says it plans to have Twinkies and other snack cakes back on shelves starting July 15. Go ahead and read the rest if you want, but all that matters is JULY 15TH!!! TWINKIES!!! WOOOO!!!!!

The project, known as MetaPhone, works like this: The researchers are asking willing participants to install an app on their Android phones that will transmit basic metadata from their telephone. The researchers will try to deduce as much information as possible from that data, presumably in the same fashion as the NSA. In order to find out whether their deductions are accurate, the team is also asking participants to provide basic information from their Facebook pages. “Our hypothesis is that phone metadata is packed with meaning,” Mayer said. It’s Not A High-Speed Police Chase Until Deep Fryers Come Flying Out Of The Escape Vehicle [Consumerist] You might’ve think you’ve heard about an intense, high-speed police chase, but you’d be wrong. Or at least you thought you knew what intense was, before reading that one particular police showdown had deep fryers flying out the back of a suspect’s truck. Deep fryers! Flying! It’s too much excitement to bear on a Friday, but let’s forge ahead, shall we? KHOU.com has the story out of Houston, where four men were allegedly part of a team that burgled a kitchen supply store late Wednesday night. Perhaps there was a dire need for cutlery or a lot of fried chicken, bec…

There are three important features that make Burger King in Japan a very different experience: apples, booze, and couches, or ABC. Apples? Yes, Burger King has brought back their limited-time apple burgers in Japan, which feature grilled apple slices instead of tomatoes. Are they any good? There are two burgers available with apple: The BK Ringo, a small burger that features one apple slice and cinnamon mayonnaise, and the NY Whopper, a larger sandwich with two apple slices and hollandaise sauce. “Ringo” is Japanese for “apple,” and has nothing to do with any famous drummers. The NY Whopper concept comes from the vaguely NYC-ish theme that Burger King is using to market…

A forthcoming Justice Department report on the Ferguson Police Department has found that city officials engage in practices that discriminate against black residents and routinely violate the Constitution and federal law, according to officials familiar with the results of the investigation. The formal report, expected to be released Wednesday, largely blames the Missouri city for breeding mistrust of the police through its policies. The report is particularly critical of ticketing practices in Ferguson, which like many other municipalities in St. Louis County, relies heavily on its local court system to generate revenue for the city. This is likely not interesting to some, but it was cool they grabbed him. Shut the plant down for a weekend while they filmed it. Looks like he will be directing and starring in these commercials for the next couple of years.

So, tracking is the way of the ad world now, but until recently google wasn't using your information to personally identify you. That's probably changed if you accepted an innocuous email this past year. Bottom of that article tells you where to opt out, but it's worth reading it all. https://www.propublica.org/article/google-has-quietly-dropped-ban-on-personally-identifiable-web-tracking

The spacecraft was a long way from home.

I thought it would be a good idea, just after Saturn, to have them take one last glance homeward. From Saturn, the Earth would appear too small for Voyager to make out any detail. Our planet would be just a point of light, a lonely pixel hardly distinguishable from the other points of light Voyager would see: nearby planets, far off suns. But precisely because of the obscurity of our world thus revealed, such a picture might be worth having.

It had been well understood by the scientists and philosophers of classical antiquity that the Earth was a mere poin…

No s.hit? When you're in deep s.hit, you probably shouldn't hide in s.hit either. This story proves that. LoL http://www.journalga...CAL07/304229977 "The long, narrow barn has an open-air trough that runs along one side of the building and flows into a vat covered by a steel grate. The setup allowed the farmers who once used the barn to spray the animal manure from the floor into a holding tank. An officer looked down and there, through the steel grate in the floor, he could see the 52-year-old man, just his head peering out from the cesspool deep with frigid feces..."
