  1. Count the months on your knuckles and the grooves between your knuckles. Leave out your thumb knuckle. Every month that lands on a knuckle is 31 days, every month that lands on a groove between knuckles is 30 days (or 28 for February). http://lifehacker.com/232828/macgyver-tip-use-your-knuckles-to-remember-each-months-days

  2. Incinerated partial remains of at least 274 troops were reportedly dumped at landfill between 2004-08 by the largest military mortuary in the US. The Washington Post report was based on data from Dover Air Force Base, the main entry port for US war dead. The newspaper first broke the story last month, but it was not known how many remains were dumped at landfill. Families, who had agreed for the remains to be disposed of respectfully, were unaware of the practice. Pentagon officials did not authorise the procedure, which was reported by whistleblowers. Air Force officials, who have denied a cover-up, said last month they could not estimate the precise number of casualties…

  3. I can't believe that people are actually SCAMMING the system when it comes to the Humble Indie Bundle and the current Steam Holiday Sale in order to try to work the system to get more entries into the stupid Steam Holiday contest. It makes me VERY angry that people would stoop so low, but of course not a lot surprises me these days. So, I'm giving a big F U to all the asshats out there who ruin all the good things for the rest of us.

It’s one thing to make an object invisible, like Harry Potter’s mythical cloak. But scientists have made an entire event impossible to see. They have invented a time masker. Think of it as an art heist that takes place before your eyes and surveillance cameras. You don’t see the thief strolling into the museum, taking the painting down or walking away, but he did. It’s not just that the thief is invisible — his whole activity is. What scientists at Cornell University did was on a much smaller scale, both in terms of events and time. It happened so quickly that it’s not even a blink of an eye. Their time cloak lasts an incredibly tiny fraction of a fraction of a second. Th…

  7. In the next week, the US congress will return to Washington for a bit of work. The first item on the agenda is to debate and pass the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA. SOPA is intended to give media owners the tools to act against those who infringe their copyright in all forms of media, be it audio, video or text. Be it the movie industry, the music industry, the publishing industry, and yes, the games industry. But the legislation is awful, and it affects gamers worldwide. Under SOPA, e-sports is under threat. Game streaming is under threat. In-game voice chat is under threat. In-game text chat could be turned off. Gaming forums are under threat. And the gaming media (us…

  8. So I don't usually buy stock. I'm not rich and I don't have a lot to invest. Back when Netflix had it's IPO (Initial Public Offering) on the stock market I really encouraged my father to purchase stock in the company. I think the shares were around $40? He balked at it and didn't do anything, and then a few years later used to complain when I showed him stocks were over $250. Aaaaand then came the big crash back in October. Stocks got back down to around $62 and selling due to the poor outlook, losing customers and increased pricing structure (not the mention the Qwikster debacle). I told him to buy again. I knew Netflix was about to expand to EU markets and with t…

  10. HB 2696 seeks to charge 1% tax on all games sold in state rated Teen, Mature, and Adults-Only; money collected would go toward Sooner State's obesity and bullying prevention funds. "A gentleman shot a police officer and stole his car," Fourkiller said. "He had been playing Grand Theft Auto. Not everybody is going to react the same, but I believe after hours and hours of watching the screen, playing the video game, being that person and taking on that role, people get desensitized." That same gentleman probably grew up watching The Three Stooges and Looney Tunes, too. So? Are we going to tax kid's shows now, too? Politicians need to keep their greedy, corrupted hands off o…

Only days after clearing Congress, US President Barack Obama signed his name to H.R. 347 on Thursday, officially making it a federal offense to cause a disturbance at certain political events — essentially criminalizing protest in the States. 17. Popular video game consoles such as Nintendo's Wii and Microsoft's Xbox 360 may resemble the new battlefields for national security in the eyes of the U.S. military. The U.S. Navy has begun funding a project to hack previously owned game consoles in an effort to dig up gamers' online chat room information and other stored data. U.S. console gamers can breathe a tiny sigh of relief for now, because the current project forbids targeting "U.S. persons." Instead, the Navy wants a California-based company called Obscure Technologies to buy video game consoles bought in used overseas markets, and to create computer forensic tools capable of hacking such consoles. "This project …

  20. An onrush of condemnation and criticism kept the SOPA and PIPA acts from passing earlier this year, but US lawmakers have already authored another authoritarian bill that could give them free reign to creep the Web in the name of cybersecurity. As congressmen in Washington consider how to handle the ongoing issue of cyberattacks, some legislators have lent their support to a new act that, if passed, would let the government pry into the personal correspondence of anyone of their choosing. H.R. 3523, a piece of legislation dubbed the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (or CISPA for short), has been created under the guise of being a necessary implement in Americ…

  22. Tim Schafer is no longer the king of Kickstarter, he handed over his crown to a company called Pebble Technology. They're making an E-Ink display, fully customizable watch called Pebble. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/597507018/pebble-e-paper-watch-for-iphone-and-android?ref=category The watch is fully customizable and works with both Android and iOS. You can do everything from change your watch display to check your text messages, track your distance, control your music and much more. What's crazy about this is, they're almost to $4 million and still have 31 days left to go. This could easily jump to $5 or even $10 million. Check it out.

  24. from the not-quite-as-impressive dept Over the last few years, we've noticed that nearly every victory the FBI celebrates against terrorism is actually about stopping its own terrorist plots that it feeds to hapless individuals, often nudging them and pushing them down the road to "become" terrorists, despite commonly displaying little to no aptitude for actual terrorism. Add the NY Times to the newspapers who are beginning to question the FBI's penchant for setting up its own plots for the sake of a high profile arrest of some clueless individuals. The United States has been narrowly saved from lethal terrorist plots in recent years - or so it has seemed. A would-be suic…

  25. The unexpected death of conservative commentator Andrew Breitbart just got a whole lot more mysterious. Only two months after Breitbart’s passing, the coroner that investigated the cause of death may have succumbed to arsenic poisoning. Michael Cormier, 61, passed away on April 20, the Los Angeles Times reports this week. Although Cormier’s death is only being publicized now, the timing of actual passing actually came within hours of the release of the preliminary autopsy report of Breitbart. Commenting to the Times on the latest news, Lt. Alan Hamilton of the Los Angeles Police Department says that investigators have not ruled out foul play in the death of Cormier. Autho…
