Video Games

Requirements

Tiger Cubs, Cub Scouts, and Webelos Scouts may complete requirements in a family, den, pack, school, or community environment. Tiger Cubs must work with their parents or adult partners. Parents and partners do not earn loops or pins.

Complete these three requirements:

  1. Explain why it is important to have a rating system for video games. Check your video games to be sure they are right for your age.
  2. With an adult, create a schedule for you to do things that includes your chores, homework, and video gaming. Do your best to follow this schedule.
  3. Learn to play a new video game that is approved by your parent, guardian, or teacher.

Earn the Video Games belt loop and complete five of the following requirements:

  1. With your parents, create a plan to buy a video game that is right for your age group.
  2. Compare two game systems (for example, Microsoft Xbox, Sony PlayStation, Nintendo Wii, and so on). Explain some of the differences between the two. List good reasons to purchase or use a game system.
  3. Play a video game with family members in a family tournament.
  4. Teach an adult or a friend how to play a video game.
  5. List at least five tips that would help someone who was learning how to play your favorite video game.
  6. Play an appropriate video game with a friend for one hour.
  7. Play a video game that will help you practice your math, spelling, or another skill that helps you in your schoolwork.
  8. Choose a game you might like to purchase. Compare the price for this game at three different stores. Decide which store has the best deal. In your decision, be sure to consider things like the store return policy and manufacturer’s warranty.
  9. With an adult’s supervision, install a gaming system.

i am seriously LOL'ing at this right now lol..

Some of the tips are good like checking for the better deal...

but realy.. "teaching someone to play a video game". Are playing video games taht hard and also, who never played one?

thats so stupid, when i was inthe scouts video games were the last thign anyone even thought of.

I agree with stealthy and CoyAndChris, the pinewood and soapbox derbies were just plain awesome... I still have one of my cars as well. This was one of the things back then where you could have fun crafting things with family and friends... friendly competition, you don't see that much.... anymore

All the comments are pretty amusing coming from a bunch of gamers. I don't think the point is all that lost. It's just one badge among many. Not like Boy Scouts are losing the rest of it. Like most of the badges and activities in Boy Scouts, this one is geared towards you learning something ( even if it is pricing merchandise or learning the patience of teaching a parent to play) and being active with your family and friends. The rest is a mixture to make it fun.

I'll have to agree with Dateranoth on this one. While the idea may seem pretty ridiculous considering Boy Scouts are generally thought of being outdoors, I actually think it's a good thing. Stealthy said it best, video games weren't even thought back in the day. This isn't the case with this generation, video game popularity is rapidly increasing and children are starting playing at younger ages each and every year. Along with more popularity and gaming, several problems arise with this boost in use including Obesity and video game violence. That's why I think these are a good thing, they teach children how to moderate their gaming time and choose the right games to play while promoting family time. Rules 1 and 2 sum up why these badges are good things, it promotes mature choices of video games and mature time management. The fact is, children are being exposed to video games more and it's becoming part of their lifestyle so the boys scouts are evolving along with this change and this badge promotes good gaming.

I see what they are trying to do... It looks like a good idea from the start, but I think it needs some more work so it doesn't come off as "stupid".

I agree Stealthy. Back when I was a scout it was all about the box car derby bro. I still have a few of the cars I made lying around in storage someplace. :)

dude the last pinewood derby i got to compete in my car kicked ***, undeafeated the entire day. ah i miss those days
