So I Defragged My Pc's Hard Drive Yesterday.....

Featured Replies

SEVEN AND A HALF HOURS. WTF. Seriously? And to top it all off it's not like it just defrags once. It went through NINE "passes"? I've never seen that before and I only used the regular Windows system defrag tool. And every "pass" it analyzes, defrags, consolidates and something else I forgot.

I use Vopt defragger. Quickest one I've ever used and it has many great options included.

Also, with the Windows defragger, it needs almost complete focus. If you have something running that makes changes to the registry or hard drive, it'll start over. That could be just refreshing a page in your browser (internet cache etc). Not sure about the Win7 defragger, bu older ones wouldn't work if your computer was set to hibernate or go to sleep.

Nope. I have Win 7 and I turned off sleep mode and disabled all programs before booting up the defragger. I wanted it to have complete focus, and it still took 7+ hours. LoL

/facepalm

Computer runs a little better now though and boots quicker. *shrugs* Took away a whole day of me playing Tanks though! hahaha

If you are using windows defrag you are best suited to set it to automatically run. It will do a little when your comp is idle and only when it needs it.

LoL I have it set that way but I almost NEVER leave it on. I always turn it off when not in use. That being said, I don't think I've ever fully defragged it before. I've started it before and get bored after an hour or two and cancel it out and go back to using it. I'm guessing it really needed it. hahaha

Thats crazy!

I never use the native windows one anymore. A friend of mine turned me on to this one awhile back and it is free. Seems to work pretty well and it defrags really fast. Cnet has some reviews on it I think.

Here is the link if you want to try it. I think they have a paid version too but I never got that one. I just stick with the free one.
