There is one hyphenated word that truly arouses mixed reactions from gamers around the world.Cross-Platform.

Can't we all just play along?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock this past decade, you’d recognize the term and possibly have even experienced some early attempts at cross-platform titles like Shadowrun for the PC/Xbox 360. Even Valve’s upcoming release of Portal 2 promises to connect users of the Playstation Network up against PC players gaming on Steam. Cross-platform titles are essentially games that you can play online one system against users on a completely different console. What is the limit of gaming interconnectivity? We’ve seen what can happen between two systems, but why stop there?

Five years ago you would have laughed if I told you that you’d be sitting on your couch playing your home gaming console, slaying monsters alongside someone halfway across the world that is playing the same game on their phone. Are you laughing now? If you are then I hope you’re laughing WITH the masterminds over at Trendy Entertainment as they put the finishing touches on their outstanding upcoming release of Dungeon Defenders!

Dungeon Defenders, a hybrid action RPG/Tower Defense, has recently revealed a plan to conquer the world and unite gamers across the globe. PC? Check. PS3? Check. iOS & Android users? Double check! Utilizing the online tools provided by Gamespy Open, Trendy Entertainment has accomplished the seemingly impossible. It boggles one’s mind to fathom how small handheld phones could possibly keep pace gaming rigs and home consoles but it’s happening and it’s exciting!

TRENDY TO SHOW OFF DUNGEON DEFENDERS CROSS-PLATFORM PLAY AT GDC

Developer of the smash hit, Unreal-powered iOS/Android game to demo and discuss in panel PS3, PC, Android & iOS cross-platform play at GDC 2011!

Twain Harte, California – March 2, 2011 – Reverb Publishing and Trendy Entertainment today announced that Dungeon Defenders will be shown on the floor at Game Developers Conference 2011, demoing true four-player cross-platform multiplayer across the PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, Windows-based PCs, iOS and Android devices-a first for this industry.

"We're doing things now that we've dreamed about doing for years," said Jeremy Stieglitz, COO and co-founder of Trendy Entertainment. "The industry is inevitably moving towards platform-agnostic interconnectivity for multiplayer and anytime/anywhere access to in-game content. Companies have trained us to expect such access with our music, our photos and any online media, pretty much everything. It's only natural for us to give gamers the ability to play Dungeon Defenders online, anywhere they want, whatever their platforms of choice."

Reverb and Trendy will host demos at GameSpy Technology's booth (914 in the Moscone center South Hall) during GDC. Trendy will also appear during the Conference Session – "Breaking the Cross Platform Multiplayer Barrier", Thursday, March 3 @ 1:30 p.m., Esplanade Room #310

Hailed by fans and critics for gorgeous graphics and deep gameplay, the Dungeon Defenders series debuted earlier this year with Dungeon Defenders: First Wave, the only iOS title besides Infinity Blade to use Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3 and the only Unreal based Android game. Dungeon Defenders recently took a bow at Sony's unveil of the Next Generation Portable during its announcement event in Tokyo, where Epic's Tim Sweeney used Dungeon Defenders to show off Epic's tech running on the NGP. It was most recently announced at the Sony Ericsson press conference during Mobile World Congress that Dungeon Defenders: Second Wave would come to Sony's Xperia PLAY as a two month exclusive. The full version of Dungeon Defenders will arrive on Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network later this year.

Dungeon Defenders utilizes many of GameSpy Technology's cross-platform online services, which includes multiplayer matchmaking and deep player data tracking. Additionally, Trendy Entertainment is among the first studios to take advantage of GameSpy Open, GameSpy's newly announced initiative to make all of its services available to start-up and independent developers for free.
