It is unethical to keep someone from eating for 36 hours?

Ok trying not going to drag my story out but the simple version is:

My granddaddy was put in the hospital yesterday after going to the doctor at about noon. He got to the hospital at 5 pm and was finally put in a room at 6 pm. The doctors didn't start running tests until 11 pm (he had an ultrasound), then he had some blood tests done at around 1. Surgeons came in at 2 am to talk to him and my Mama, they wanted to run a CT scan and said it would be scheduled for 10 am. Well someone (i.e. multiple people) dropped the ball and he didn't end up going for his CT scan until 6:15 pm only after my Mama and Aunt kept making a fuss to the nurses on the floor. They wouldn't let him eat anything because they didn't want food to screw up the test. He hadn't had anything to eat since yesterday morning at like 7 or 8. After he got back from his CT scan they finally said he could eat something, this was around 7.

Shorter version of short version:

The past two days of my Granddaddy's life:

Yesterday:

7 or 8 am: Ate small breakfast.

12 pm : Went to doctor.

5 pm : Sent to hospital.

6 pm : Put in room.

11 pm : ultrasound

Today:

1 am : blood tests

2 am : Surgeons wanted to schedule CT scan

10 am : Time CT scan was supposed to take place

6:15 pm : Time CT scan actually took place

7:30 pm : Time he was finally able to eat again.

I guess it depends if it was for a good reason. You don't want to mess up a scan, but they should have let him after they missed the first time. Food would have been well into the later digestive track by the later test. Sucks but little to be done about it. File a complaint and maybe they'll do better for the next person. Hope he's better soon.

Yeah he got discharged today. He was super happy to be out of there but they still don't know what the problem is.
