Don't really know what this means, but apparently, it's a pretty big deal

A rumor has gone viral in the physics community that the world's largest atom smasher may have detected a long-sought subatomic particle called the Higgs boson, also known as the "God particle,"

i saw that article, and it struck me as odd that they were saying it was rumors and whatnot, because i swear i read a more difinitive statement on the whole thing weeks ago, but i wouldn't even know where to start looking for the other article

Yeah I read the same thing MWB. And the cool thing was that it was the smasher here in the US (Fermilab) and not at CERN. I googled it and here is some info. It was reported once and then blammo, everything went silent.

Very true PK. I know that they are scrambling and they want to continue to be first. I know that the Tevatron was responsible for finding a bunch of "firsts", even while CERN was active, but who knows at this point. *shrugs*

I still loves my particle physics though! I love to imagine how beautiful and graceful things appear (and I use that term loosely) on an planetary/intergalactic scale when compared to how chaotic (again, used loosely) things seem on the quantum level. I wish they could tie the two worlds together.

A Higgs Boson is basically believed to be anti-matter, discharged a millionth of a second after the Big Bang. If it were to have been discovered, it lends credence to String Theory. Which states there is matter so faint and destructive, it can only exist in a Universe parallels to our own (a multi-verse). And if found could potentially be harnessed to create a gateway between another Universe(s) and our own.

Also, the Higgs Bason in Theoretical Science is only present within the first second of a cosmic spaces creation, meaning the Big Bang is not at all unique, but the result of the fabric of time and space colliding every few hunderd billion years. Or created in the destruction of a Universe known as the the Great Rip, when a space becomes so vast it actually breaks space-time destroying all matter within it.

here we are, hairless apes barely dry behind the ears. what fools we are. humanitiy's lack of ability to truley learn and it's cruelty have really been multiplying exponentially lately, and it's beginning to wear on me.
