After I beat Chapter 7 and got back to Guardians Colony, my character said something about going back to my room, so I did, but nothing happened. It is like the storyline has stopped.

All I can seem to do are free missions.

What do I need to do to progress in the storyline?

I know absolutely nothing about this game, but I did a little Google, and I may have solved your issue. Talk to Pete and choose the option under use storage, then the top choice (talk). After you do that, the story should start up again.
