Not everyone can be a hero.

This phrase, and ones similar to it, have been spoken throughout generations. Teachers, parents, leaders, they have all said it, and everyone has heard it. Not once or twice but a hundred thousand times.

If everyone had a super power then what would the world even be? Just a bunch of beefed up super dudes bro fisting each other so hard that they collapse a nearby building. I get it, not everybody is special, but that doesn’t stop us from dreaming.

Nobody knows how the heroes came to be, there are the rumors and tinfoil hat theories. Most people? They just don’t care. They go about their normal lives, with some minor hero inconveniences. Don’t even get me started on how many days I’ve been late because a hero thought the train was due to explode. But overall, I think the world has been a safer place because of it.

Some kids are obviously going to be heroes. Joey is the fastest kid on the track team and I guarantee once he hits 20, he’ll get that letter and that switch will be turned on. He’ll go from Joey the fast kid to TURBO JOE. Me? I’m destined to be nobody. I guess I’m okay with that. I’m pretty shy anyways, I’d rather watch people or read about the things they’ve done. Sometimes I like to imagine I get that letter. "You are a hero." I’ll be 20 in a week and the closer I get, the more unrealistic my expectations are becoming.

One night over a dinner of pizza pockets, my best friend Kenny slams the question on me. “So what are you going to do if you’re not a hero?” Easy for him to say. He comes from a family of heroes, he’s almost guaranteed a free hero pass. I shrug my shoulders and pop another pizza pocket in my mouth. “Continue my journalism degree, I suppose. That was the plan all along right?” Kenny shrugs his shoulders. “I guess, it just seems so lame.” I agree. Journalism is kind of lame compared to super hero powers.

On the morning of my 20th birthday, I woke up in a cold sweat. This was it. I was 20 years old and today I would either be a man or a hero. Nobody who is a hero can tell you how they found out. It's super secret, so I’m not really sure what to expect. I hang around in my apartment, attempting to do things to occupy myself but I give up when the doorbell rings. My heart stops. It isn’t Kenny, he has a key. I run to the door but stop short of ripping it open. Stay calm. Breathe.

I open the door. Nobody's there. I look down the hall for the neighborhood kids. That's when I see it: a small slip of white paper with my name on it. I rip the paper from my door handle and slam the door. Sinking to my knees, I hold the paper in front of my eyes. My hands are sweating, my heart is racing. I take one deep breath and open up the paper.

HEROES BUREAU

111 SECRET HIDE OUT AVE

Future Hero,

We here at the Heroes Bureau wish to welcome you to the status of elite. You have been chosen among your peers as a candidate for Super Hero status. Below you will find your power and additional information about the --

I skip the rest. I go to the bottom of the page.

I, Morgan Freeman, am The Narrator.

I smile. "I am a hero" I whisper, and above me my voice booms among the clouds.

As the title implies, this is something that I wanted to share. I had a creative paper project that was due for my Arts and Humanities course on Sunday. I was supposed to come up with a monument that I would have erected in my honor and describe why, who I am, and include what I learned from the course this semester. This was a unique project for me, because this is also child abuse awareness month. I found this in a way therapeutic that I could tie my childhood past into this project. This is what I wrote. I cut it off where it starts to turn into boring class crap.

As a child, I did not feel much love if any love from my mother and as a young girl who dreams were bigger than her blue eyes, that is all that I wanted. Instead, that love was replaced by repeated physical beatings that left me bruised, scarred and scratches covering my face, humiliations privately and publicly, and constant emotional threats being made against my well-being that left me in shambles. That little girl who one day dreamed of a knight in shining armor taking her away from that place and showing her the world was quickly fading.

I often would do small things to see if my mother would stop her relenting abuse such as completing chores when I was not asked or even just hiding in my room escaping to a world of blonde Barbie dolls and their plastic headed boyfriends that to me were beautiful, loved, and perfect in every way, because I was in control of their well-being and I was determined to not let another human being or possession of mine feel like they were a waste of perfectly good air space as I so often did.

It was not until I reached my teenage years that I realized that the love I sought so often from my mother, I received from my grandmother. She was my ray of sunshine in a world that was often dark and torturous. She showed me every ounce of love that I have ever wanted and accepted me for who I was, who I wanted to be, and how I saw the world. When I had thoughts in my childhood and adolescence of ending it all in order to never be humiliated or harmed by my mother again, I often thought of what my grandmother would say and do as I was her only grandchild and I know that I meant the world to her, because unlike my mother she was able to show me the love that I needed. Those nagging unspoken words and feelings are what kept me going in my world of hurt, anguish, and tears; a world that a young child should never be in.

Now at the age of 30 and having a family of my own, I can reflect back and know that everything I went through as a young impressionable child has only made me stronger and helped me to understand that if I could make it through those 18 years of torturous hell before I did find my knight in shining armor, I can do anything that is laid out before me. That is because of the undying and nurturing love that I received from my grandmother.

Anyone have any ideas on how to figure out comic values and/or what they're worth?

Been going through a bunch of my dad's old comics that I helped him store and bag and put away when I was a little kid that we all completely forgot about and I ran across this gem

.... and that's just the tip of the iceberg. You're looking at Avenger's issue #1, original from 1963 and in pretty fantastic condition despite the stupid camera phone picture (picture was taken in low light basement so I had to brighten it up a little). No rips, no tears, all pages intact and unstained, cover in great shape and no stickers (the sticker on the front is on the plastic sleeve, not the comic). It's bagged and sleeved but I'm thinking it should probably be professionally "graded" and "appraised".

Just going through some of this stuff it looks like he has at least issues 1-8 of Avengers, a whole bunch of old and early run Fantastic Four, Thor, Spiderman, Batman and a ridiculous amount of other crap. I'm feeling a little overwhelmed but from what I read that Avenger's #1 is probably worth a decent amount of money. It's not "mint" condition, but I did a little reading and an article popped up that one went at auction that was like a 9.6 grade or something for close to $270k so this one has to be worth at LEAST a few thousand if not a lot more.

May as well post about another graphic novel series that was pretty great. Scott Pilgrim is at times down to earth and fairly serious, while at other times over the top and stylized like a video game. Tons of awesome references in it. I read this series back around the time the movie was coming out, and the movie is yet another great adaptation. The books are even being rereleased in colorized versions. Anyone else ever check these out?

I already thought the movie that came out a few years back was awesome, but I just got done reading the first part (8 issues) of the original comic of Kick-Ass and it is pretty great too. I'm definitely going to read Hit Girl and second series before watching the movie of Kick-Ass 2. Has anyone else read these?

So I started reading the seven comic series, Johnny the Homicidal Maniac a few days ago. I just finished reading the fifth one, though there are a couple spin offs featuring different characters. It was created by Jhonen Vasquez, the creator of Invader Zim (which I've never seen much of but would like to check out, also due to it's titular character voicing a character in the Destroy All Humans games). I'd describe it as darkly humorous. It gets kind of messed up at some points but there's always an underlying irony of sorts.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_the_Homicidal_Maniac

Has anyone else ever read this series?

Where do I place my faith, in a world in such despair.

I'm left in a spinning circle, with nowhere to go.

I wish to keep in touch with a life left without repair.

I can only keep moving on, with comfort in what I know.

Life will lead me out, just as it led me in.

I can only guess the outcome, and never know the end.

I'll make it through the struggle that started from within.

I don't know where I'm going, but have the knowledge of where I've been.

I feel the pull of temptation, and I can't help but to relent.

The mistakes I've made today I will pay for with regret.

I can only hope my salvation lies in my ability to repent.

Though, life is a hard road, I know my path is never set.

To the end of it all I will travel, with searching eyes.

And only at the last moment of it all will I say my goodbyes.
